What if I told you that the key to nailing your New Year resolutions this year is as simple as making a commitment to eating at home with the family?
“Too easy!” you say, “So what’s the catch?”
The catch? No catch, you just have to cook the meals yourself.
Not convinced eating at healthy home cooked meals will solve all these problems?
Let me show you in more detail:
Lose weight: You have more control over food you prepare at home. You’re less likely to go overboard on the carbs and you can watch the fat, salt and sugar content too. Go for fresh, simple food and do as little to it as you can. Combine this with a gentle exercise routine of say, 30 minutes brisk walking a day, and the weight problem will virtually solve itself.
Spend more time with the family: We’re all so busy these days, but if you can make a house rule that everyone is home at a certain time for dinner (at least some of the time), then you get the value of sharing a meal together as well as sharing some time together. This is made all the more special because you’ve prepared the meal yourself. In fact, get the kids involved and teach them some valuable skills while you are at it.

Get the kids eating healthier food: As you take care of your own resolution to lose weight the kids will benefit too from the healthier food. The only difference is that active kids and teens need more carbs than you do, so give them a serving of low GI brown rice, whole wheat pasta, or wholegrain bread.
Save money; Pay more off the credit card; and Travel more: I’ve lumped these three together because they can all be solved the same way. That is, once you are regularly eating at home, buying unprocessed foods, and not forking out a fortune on fast food and take out, you’ll notice a welcome side effect on your budget. You’ll be starting to save money. Money you can put away for a ‘rainy day’, put on the credit card, or save for a decent holiday. Every little bit helps, and in my experience raw fruit and vegetables and other unprocessed foods are much cheaper to buy than food that just needs to be heated and served.
Take up a new hobby: I think you’ve probably already guessed where I’m heading with this one! Yes, why not join the fastest growing movement in the western world and really get into cooking your own food! You don’t need to produce restaurant quality food every night. Who needs that kind of pressure! All you need is to allow yourself to enjoy food, fresh food, with as many of your senses as you can muster, and share the enthusiasm with your family.

Prior planning is important when designing a menu and recipes to cook from it. People who take some time to plan out menus can select a wider variety of recipes. Food isn’t only about the taste and nutrition, it’s about presentation and the whole experience. Everyone can enjoy the same basic food if it’s made into a variety of different meals.
Take ground beef for example. Ground beef and wheat with vegetables and tomato sauce (ketchup) is a burger Well, it’s also tacos. Tacos and hamburgers have a lot of the same basic ingredients, but to most people they’re very different foods. Many different meals can come from one food. Let’s try another one. Chicken and potatoes. French fries and fried chicken can be fattening and thus not healthy. Roasting both will save the waist line. Still chicken and potatoes. How to make Poppy Seed Dinner Rolls. Homemade, handmade – Poppy Seed Dinner Rolls are amazing — made with all natural ingredients. With this recipe, you can totally resist the urge to reach for the ones on the supermarket shelf. Ingredients 2 envelopes of quick-rising dry yeast 1/3 cup plus 1/4 tsp sugar, divided 1 cup of warm water 2/3 cup of whole milk, room temperature 1/4 cup of oil 1 egg 1 tbsp of poppy seeds 5 1/3 cups of all purpose flour, divided 1 cup of unsalted butter, chilled 3 tbsp of unsalted butter, melted non-stick spray extra poppy seeds for garnish Instructions 1. In a mixer bowl, dissolve quick-rising dry yeast and sugar in warm water and let it stand until the mixture is slightly foamy. 2. Attach the dough hook to the mixer and turn to speed 2. Add milk, oil, egg, sugar, poppy seeds and salt. 3. Mix well until everything is combined – about 30 seconds. 4. Gradually add flour to the batter and mix it until smooth-about 1 minute 5. Combine flour and chilled butter in a food processor (or you can use a pastry cutter) until the mixture resembles a coarse meal. Add this to the batter in the mixing bowl. 6. Turn to speed 2 and mix until the dry ingredients are incorporated. 7. Knead on speed 2 until smooth, about 2 minutes longer. 8. Add up to 1/3 of a cup of flour-more if the dough remains sticky. 9. Baked Spaghetti Family Dinner Recipe
When it came to family dinners in our home, Spaghetti was at the top of the list with our children. Now that our children are all grown, my husband and I enjoy a more grown-up version of this favorite American dish.
I do not recommend freezing any left-overs, however, it will keep for up to 3 days in your refrigerator.
The following recipe will yield 6 servings.
Baked Spaghetti Dinner Recipe
1 cup onion, finely chopped
1 cup green pepper, chopped
1 tablespoon butter or margarine
1 (28 ounces) can tomatoes with liquid, chopped

1 can (4 ounces) mushroom stems and pieces, drained
2 teaspoons dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 lb. lean ground beef, browned and drained
12 ounces spaghetti noodles, cooked and drained
2 cups Cheddar cheese, shredded
1 can (10 3/4 ounces) cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
1/4 cup tap water
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
In a large frying pan, saute the onion and green pepper in butter until fork tender. Stir in the chopped tomatoes, mushrooms, oregano and basil. Simmer for 2-3 minutes and then stir in the cooked ground beef. Continue to simmer over medium heat, uncovered for approximately 8-10 minutes.
Place half of the cooked spaghetti noodles in a lightly greased 9 x 13″ baking dish. Pour half of the vegetable mixture on top of the pasta and then sprinkle with one cup of Cheddar cheese. Repeat the layers. Pour the soup into a small bowl and mix in 1/4 cup of warm tap water until they are combined. Pour the soup mixture over the casserole. Sprinkle the top with grated Parmesan cheese.
Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 30 minutes or until it’s heated through.

But you know better. Your family’s nutrition is your utmost concern and as the health-conscious parent you are, you know that nothing beats the taste and nourishment of a home-cooked meal.
The truth remains, however, that after a long day from work, it can be a tiring job to prepare dinner. Make your life a little easier with these healthy dinner recipes that you can whip up in 20 minutes!
Maple-Chili Glazed Pork Medallions (from EatingWell September/October 2007)
1. Mix 1 teaspoon chili powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon ground chipotle pepper in a small bowl. Sprinkle over both sides of pork.
2. Heat 2 teaspoons of canola oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the 1 pound pork tenderloin (already trimmed and cut crosswise into 1 inch thick medallions) and cook until golden, 1 to 2 minutes per side. Add 1/4 cup cider, 1 tablespoon maple syrup and 1 teaspoon of cider vinegar to the pan. Bring to a boil, scraping up any browned bits. Reduce the heat to medium and cook, turning the pork occasionally to coat, until the sauce is reduced to a thick glaze, 1 to 3 minutes. Serve the pork drizzled with the glaze.

Oven-Fried Fish Recipe
1. Heat the oven to 350F/180C/gas 4. Cut 4 skinned salmon fillets into strips.
2. Mix 85g (3/4 cup) wholemeal breadcrumbs (easily made in a food processor or sturdy blender) with 2 tbsp finely chopped parsley and 50g (1/2 cup) grated cheese. Parmesan is the best, but you can use Cheddar or any other hard cheese you have.
3. Spread this mixture on to a plate. Beat 1 egg, and spread 50g (1/2 cup) flour on to another plate.
4. Dip each fish slice first into the flour, then into the egg, and finally into the breadcrumbs to coat.
5. Place fish on a lightly oiled baking tray and cook in the oven for 15 minutes until the fish is cooked.
Apple Almond Crunch Salad
Use a large salad bowl to combine 1 (10 ounce) package of mixed salad greens with ½ cup slivered almonds, 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese, 1 cup tart apple (cored and chopped), 1/2 cup sliced red onion and 1/4 cup golden raisins. Toss until blended and apply the raspberry vinaigrette salad dressing for individual servings.
Scrambled Egg Pasta Recipe
1. In a small bowl, beat together 4 eggs and 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese; set aside.
2. In a large skillet, fry 8 slices thick bacon (chopped) and 1 onion together until the meat is browned and crispy and the onion has begun to caramelize.
3. Add 4 cups al-dente cooked pasta (if using cold day-old pasta, cook until it’s just warmed through, about 1 minute).
4. Pour the egg-and-cheese mixture into the skillet and reduce heat to low. Stir continuously until the pasta is coated with the eggs and they have begun to solidify.
5. Season with the salt and pepper, then serve immediately, with extra grated Parmesan on the side.

Frying and deep fat frying is the worst possible way of cooking the food you love. There are lots of kitchen appliances that steam, dry fry, grill and bake your favourite foods so just get looking, you will thank yourself for the treat too because the outcome will taste even better.
Cooking for two, well healthy dinners recipes can be made throughout the day (while you’re out earning) just put enough meat for whom ever will be eating it i.e. 400g or so of minced steak in to the slow cooker with any kind of vegetables you love chopped up and chucked in. One can of garlic chopped tomato and chillies, if suited, and leave to cook all day on low (at least 7hours)
Like cooking with wine? Add half a glass (125mls) of your favourite red and this will add luscious flavour. Now this meal can be re-heated if you would prefer to buy enough to last you both two nights, just make sure it has cooled on the first night, pop in to a new dish in to the fridge and the next night bung in the oven for at least an hour on 180degrees and there you have your meal for two already prepared!
Many people like to bulk cook, especially in the slow cooker first as this doesn’t burn or boil away flavours, and then what ever is left is easily kept in the fridge or freezer till the next time you want it.
